Growth amount of bookings via smartphone

30 January 2017

Last year 81 percent of all the pre-arranged bookings were done online. The amount of bookings via a smartphone is increasing slowly.

In total 500.000 holidays were booked via the smartphone, which means a growth from 1 percent in 2015 to 2 percent in 2016. Especially two types of travels were smartphone booked transactions: hotel travels and/or last minute bookings. Also the amount of bookings via the tablet has increased from 9 percent to 12 percent.

Despite the fact that almost everyone in Holland has a smartphone or tablet, the desktop and laptop are still the most used devices to book a holiday. Therefore the number of bookings via a tablet is stable, however the popularity of the desktop has decreased from 39 percent to 36 percent.

The outlook for the upcoming years, according to research agency NBTC-NIPO, is that the smartphone is expected to be a main booking channel. In addition, the research agency is pointing at China, where 25 percent of the holidays are booked via the smartphone. Also the Dutch travel organizations are improving their mobile experience.
