Dutch holiday-market trends: more Dutch on holiday in 2016

11 December 2016

The Dutch holiday-market seems to be improving slowly. In the first half of the year 2016 the number of holidays rose by as much as 6 percent to 12,5 million.

An increase of 6 percent in the total number of holidays the Dutch make in comparison to 2015, that’s good news. During the same period (October – March) in 2015 the counter stopped at 11,8 million. Expectations are that the total year of 2016 will show growth, as presented by Ad Schalekamp of NBTC-NIPO Research presented during the fair TravelPRESSentation in Jaarbeurs Utrecht.

More good news…
The holiday spending also grew, the Dutch spent 3 percent more in the first half 2016 than the year before. In this there is special attention for the growth in spending on domestic holidays: 5 percent. Overall there were more domestic holidays booked: 9 percent more than in 2015. Also short holiday breaks abroad are popular, it rose to 3,2 million holidays between October 2015 and March 2016, the same level as in 2012.

But, although the forecasts look positive, it is not yet the time for a ‘hip hip hooray’. Still more than 500.000 holidays are missing to be back on the good old level of the year 2012.
